DISTRICT 1: BOSTON AND VICINITY

The Boston 1st District was established at the end of 1801 to cover the Boston area. It is unclear whether there were District Deputy Grand Masters in 1802. The district was the largest of the 12 districts created, and by 1820 had grown to 18 lodges - in part due to the growth of Boston and local interest in Freemasonry.

In 1809 the Lodge of St. Andrew, originally chartered by the Grand Lodge of Scotland, joined the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts by amending its charter. The following year, Rising States Lodge, originally an offshoot of St. Andrew, vacated its charter.
