DISTRICT 2: NEWBURYPORT AND THE NORTH SHORE
The Newburyport 2nd District was established at the end of 1801 to cover the area north of Boston. It is unclear whether there were District Deputy Grand Masters in 1802. This district, which had several lodges predating the Union of 1792, grew westward into the Merrimack Valley. In 1812 the charter for the oldest lodge in the district, Philanthropic, was withdrawn by the Grand Lodge (it was restored in 1821).
