BIOGRAPHY

From Proceedings of Grand Lodge of Rhode Island, 1943:

David Amott was elected and installed as the eighty-eighth Most Worshipful Grand Master of the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons for the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations at the One Hundred and Fifty-Second Annual Communication, held at Providence on Monday, May 18, 1942. He is the third member of Nestell Lodge, No. 37, of Providence, to be thus honored by election to the office of Grand Master of this jurisdiction.

He was born in Providence, R. I., April 21, 1881, the son of William and Margaret (Wighton) Arnott. He attended the public schools of Providence and studied machine design at the Rhode Island School of Design at Providence, R. I.

After graduating from the Machinist and Mechanical Drawing courses at the Brown & Sharpe Manufacturing Company's Apprentice School at Providence, R. I., he has been continuously in their employ serving in a position of Engineering responsibility, Estimating and Department Head. He has also, in this connection, given much time to Employees' Welfare, having served continuously as President of the Brown & Sharpe Mutual Relief Association since 1920.

He is an attendant at and a Trustee of the Washington Park Methodist Church.

He was married on February 23, 1904 to Ethel Tisdell Perkins of Providence, and they have one daughter Dorothy May Arnott, who is a teacher in the City of Providence School Department.

Brother Arnott was made a Mason in Nestell Lodge, No. 37, of Providence in 1909, and served that Lodge as its Master in 1917-1918.

He was exalted in Providence Royal Arch Chapter, No, 1, in 1911, was elected High Priest of that Chapter in 1932, and is a member of Rhode Island Convention of Anointed High Priests.

He is also a member of the following Masonic bodies: Providence Council, No. 1, Royal and Select Masters, Calvary Commandery, No. 13, Knights Templar, Rhode Island Consistory, 32nd Degree, Scottish Rite, Palestine Temple Mystic Shrine, Masonic Past Masters Association — all of Providence, and the Craftsman's Club of East Providence, National League of Masonic Clubs. In Grand Lodge, at the Annual Communication on May 15, 1933, lie was appointed Seventh District Deputy Grand Master by Most Worshipful Grand Master Augustus F. Rose, and was advanced annually to the ollice of Grand Master, serving as District Deputy for every District but the second.

He is the Grand Representative of the Grand Lodge of Missouri; was elected an Honorary Member of Rhodes Lodge, No. 44, of Cranston, R. I., and was made a Tall Cedar of Lebanon "at sight" in Massasoit Forest, Barrington, R. I.

Brother Arnott, having served as Master of his own Lodge for one year during World War I, fully understood the problems and responsibilities of leadership during such a conflict and, as Grand Master for one year of this present war, gave freely of his time, his ability, and his energies to the work of the War Service Board of Grand Lodge and to the support of the Masonic Service Association of the United States in establishing Welfare Centers for our members in the Armed Forces.
