PEOPLE of INTEREST
Colonel Phineas or Prentice Stearns Davis
Born in 1818, Worshipful Davis was a bookseller and publisher in Boston. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1862 and was Colonel of the 38th Massachusetts Regiment. He was killed at Petersburg VA on July 12 1864. Just outside of Petersburg there is a gully called Fort Davis, it was named for him as the spot where a artillery shell killed him. He was one of the organizers of Putnam Army Lodge #8. He was made a Mason in Putnam Lodge around the mid 1850's and became Master of Putnam in 1861.
