BIOGRAPHY

George D. Wells was born in Epiphany, Miner County, South Dakota, November 2, 1898. He received his education through high school at Spencer, South Dakota, and is a graduate of the School of Dentistry at University of Iowa, at Iowa City. He has a dental practice in Aberdeen.

On December 26, 1924, he was married at Canova, South Dakota, to Miss Emily Louise Novak. They have two sons, Robert and Richard, who both belong to Sunrise Lodge No. 211 in Aberdeen. Brother Wells is a member of the Presbyterian Church.

He was made a Mason in Spencer Lodge No. 126, Spencer, South Dakota, on September 3, 1920. He affiliated with Sunrise Lodge No. 211 in Aberdeen on August 2, 1929. He is a member of Aberdeen Chapter No. 14, Damascus Commandery No. 10, and Aberdeen Council No. 9, all of Aberdeen. He is an active member of Aberdeen Consistory being Coroneted an Inspector General 33rd degree Honorary on October 24, 1941. He is a Past Potentate of Yelduz Shrine and a member of Minerva Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, both of Aberdeen.

1956

The eighty-second Annual Communication was held at Yankton in 1956 with Grand Master Wells presiding. Eighteen distinguished guests from other Jurisdictions were welcomed by Grand Master Wells. The Grand Secretary of Iowa, Earl B. Delzell, responded for the visitors.

One hundred eight of the 169 chartered lodges were represented: A gain of 144 members during the year brought the total membership to 20,492.

Masonic Temples had been dedicated during the year at Lake Andes, White, Clark, and Custer.

It was reported that the George Washington Memorial at Alexandria, Virginia, was now nearly complete after 47 years of united efforts by all Grand Jurisdictions.

With the presentation of a check in the amount of $6,500.00 to the Masonic Service Association along with a previous check of $3,000.00, there was a total for the year of $9,500.00.

Memorial services were conducted for 355 South Dakota Masons. In th15 group were two Past Grand Masters, George O. Goodman and Ralph R. Twamley.

Sixty-seven 50-year medals, twenty 60-year palms, and _one 70-year palm had been authorized, but no requests had been received for Distinguished Service Award during the past year.

The Grand Trustees reported that $22,809.00 had been disbursed to worthy Brother Masons, their widows, and orphans during the past year.
