Carl H. Kubler, the fifty-seventh Grand Master of Masons of South Dakota, was born in Custer, Dakota Territory, April 14, 1887. His education was received in the grade and high schools of Custer.
After graduating from high school, he was appointed to the position of railway mail clerk; then worked in the Deadwood Post Office and was later appointed Postmaster, a position he held for many years. He also owned and conducted a general insurance business in Deadwood.
On July 27, 1910, he was married to Miss Erna Leona Maloney at Deadwood. They have two daughters, Maurine and Dorothy. They are all members of the Episcopal Church.
He became a member of Deadwood Lodge No. 7 on October 27, 1908. He received the Capitular degrees in Dakota Lodge No. 1, Lead, and the Cryptic Degrees from the Black Hills Council of Lead. The fifty-seventh Annual Communication was held in Yankton the "Mother City of the Dakotas" and the home of the first lodge, St. John's No. 1, in 1931 with Grand Master Kubler presiding. In his opening remarks the Grand Master said, "The gates of the Unseen Lodge opened suddenly to receive the spirit of our beloved Deputy Grand Master, Cyrus Burton Warne, and our beloved Grand Chaplain Brother Reverend Edward Ashley." Past Grand Masters William E. Milligan and Robert S. Lockhart were also among the 248 brothers who had laid aside the working tools of life during the year.
The committee appointed by Grand Master Kubler to investigate dual and plural membership recommended that the by-laws be so amended. Upon recommendation of the Jurisprudence Committee the report was adopted. It was then agreed to refer the question to the constituent lodges for their action. The Grand Secretary reported a loss of members for the first time in many years. The records showed 178 chartered lodges with a total membership of 19,843. A dispensation had ·been issued for a new lodge at Morristown, and Aurora Lodge No. 217 at Stickney had been constituted.
During the year Grand Master Kubler and Grand Secretary Pettigrew had attended the Grand Masters' Conference in Washington, D.C., and a meeting of the George Washington Masonic National Memorial Association in Alexandria, Virginia.
Concern was expressed by the Grand Master over the lack of funds coming into the Temporary Charity Fund, and he suggested that a assessment of one dollar be levied upon each member for one year. This recommendation was not adopted by the Grand Lodge.
The system of District Deputy Grand Masters was praised by the Grand Master saying that District Meetings had been held in each of the districts during the year.
The Board of Custodians came in for some attention when the Grand Master said, "The splendid work of our Board of Custodians has called forth hearty commendation.
The Committee on Monument reported that the work was about finished and asked for an appropriation of $150.00 to complete the work.
