HISTORY

A preliminary meeting to consider the expediency of establishing a Masonic Lodge in East Providence was held at the office of Brother Edward Dexter on May 13, 1874. Twenty two brethren holding a membership in thirteen lodges were present. After considering the subject, it was decided to go forward in the movement to establish a new Masonic Lodge. Other meetings were held on the 20th and 28th of May 1874, and the proper measures were taken to obtain a Dispensation and secure the meeting place.

The petition for a Dispensation asked that Brother George N. Bliss be designated as the first Master, John B. Randall as the first Senior Warden, and Joseph Luther as the first Junior Warden. A committee was appointed to select a name for a new Lodge. At a meeting of the committee, held on June 2, 1874, the name of “Rising Sun” was suggested by Brother A.O. Miles, then a member of Rising Sun Lodge No. 39 of Nashua, New Hampshire. This was accepted as especially appropriate and was presented to the Grand Lodge in the petition of Dispensation.

A Dispensation was granted on July 4, 1874 by the Most Worshipful Grand Master, Brother Nicholas Van Slyck, who appointed the brethren recommended in the petition to be the first officers of the Lodge. The first meeting of the newly authorized Lodge was held in the Temple of Honor Hall, East Providence on September 17, 1874. At this meeting, Worshipful Brother Bliss appointed the following officers; Edward Dexter, Treasurer; W. H. Bennett, Secretary; Charles G. Hill, Senior Deacon; John Champlin, Junior Deacon; Samuel J. Dyer, Senior Steward; Alfred Griswold, Junior Steward; Nelson W. Britton, Chaplain; and W. W. Drake, Tyler.

From this time forward, meetings were regularly held for the conferring of the degrees of Freemasonry and the transaction of business. R∴ W∴Brother John P. Luther, as a special duty, gave valuable assistance to the officers and members, and under his general direction, the ceremonies of the several degrees were conferred in an excellent manner.

A petition for a Charter, accompanied by an attested copy of the By-Laws adopted at a special Communication held May 1, 1875, and a transcript of all proceedings Tinder Dispensation was presented to the Grand Lodge at its Annual Communication held May 17, 1875, and the desired Charter was granted. An election of officers took place at a special communication on July 2, 1875. On the following afternoon, the Lodge was duly constituted, and the officers-elect were duly installed. The occasion was one of much interest to all who were privileged to be present and witness the impressive ceremony. The installation, in accordance with the prescribed ritual, was conducted by the Grand Master, M. W. Brother Nicholas Van Slyck and the officers of Grand Lodge. An address was delivered by the Grand Chaplain, Rev. H. W. Rugg. The eulogy of Masonry was delivered by the Grand Senior Warden, Joseph J. Luther, Junior Warden; Simeon Hunt, Treasurer; Clarence H. Guild, Secretary; Charles G. Hill, Senior Deacon; John Champlin, Junior Deacon; Samuel J. Dryer, Senior Steward; George Stuart, Junior Steward; Nelson Britton, Chaplain; and Frederick Blood, Tyler.

The Lodge held its first meeting in the Freemason’s Hall, Ray’s Block, East Providence. In this Masonic home many pleasant meetings were held and such good work was done in exemplifying the ritual and expressing the benign principles of the institution. The brethren of Rising Sun Lodge have always shown a zealous attachment to Freemasonry; they have made much of the social features of the organization; they have evidenced fraternal courtesies to visitors and they have succeeded in securing for the Lodge a strong and intelligent support, thus opening the way for its accomplishment of a large measure of usefulness. After meeting in Freemason’s Hall, the Lodge moved to Watchemoket Square and finally moved to our present location where the cornerstone of the Lodge was laid in place on October 25, 1924.

Throughout the years, Rising Sun Lodge No. 30 has been ably represented in the Grand Lodge. Three of our brothers have served as Grand Master of the Craft in the jurisdiction: M. W. Brother George H. Kenyon held that office during the centennial year of the Grand Lodge and the two years before (1889-1891), M. W. Brother William G. Hunt who served as Grand Master during Rising Sun Lodge’s Centennial year (1974). He is the great-grandson of Simeon Hunt, our first Treasurer; M. W. Brother William H. Abbey (1987).
