Grand Master 1960-1961
Irving Lester Tucker, of Jenks Lodge No. 24, A. F. & A. M., of Pawtucket, R. I., was elected and installed the one hundred fifth Most Worshipful Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of the Most Ancient and Honorable Society of Free and Accepted Masons for the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations at the One Hundred sixty-ninth Annual Communication held in Providence on Monday, May 16, A. L. 5960. A. L. 1960.
M. W. Brother Tucker was born in Central Falls, R. I., on February 17, 1908, son of George Henry and Fannie Jane (Harris) Tucker.
He obtained his education in the public schools of Central Falls.
Following his graduation, he entered the employment of J. & P. Coates (R. I.), Inc., Pawtucket. In 1930 he became associated with the Providence Gas Company, and for the past eight years has held the position of Cashier.
Brother Tucker is a member of the Smithfield Avenue Congregational Church in Pawtucket. He is a charter member of the Blackstone Valley Historical Society.
On January 3, 1949 he was elected a trustee of the Charles Edwin Lawton Memorial Masonic Home Association, and in 1953 was elected its President, a position ae held for three years.
He was married on October 14, 1933 to Christian A. Hutcheon, and the union has been blessed with two children, — a daughter, Marjorie E., and a son, Richard I.
On June 23, 1924 he was elected a member of Providence Chapter Order of DeMolay. The Initiatory Degree was conferred on October 11, 1924 and the DeMolay Degree on October 24, 1924. Brother Tucker is the first DeMolay to become Grand Master in the State of Rhode Island.
M. W. Brother Tucker's Masonic record began on March 18, 1929 when he wis initiated in Jenks Lodge No. 24, Pawtucket, and on June 17, 1929 he was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason. He was elected Worshipful Master of his lodge on January 5, 1948.
He was appointed District Deputy Grand Master of. the Seventh Masonic District on May 19, 1952 by M.W. Brother Fred W. Johnstone, and the following years was appointed to a similar position in other districts. On May 19, 1958 he was elected R. W. Junior Grand Warden; R. W. Senior Grand Warden on May 18, 1959; and appointed R. W. Acting Deputy Grand Master by M. W. Brother Hailes L. Palmer on September 15, 1959.
In the Capitular Rite he holds membership in Pawtucket Royal Arch Chapter No. 4, R.A.M., of Pawtucket.
In Christian Knighthood he is a member of Holy Sepulchre Commandery No. 3, K.T., of Pawtucket.
He holds membership in the four bodies of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Providence.
He is also a member of Gaspee Order No. 99, Sword of Bunker Hill.
He is an Honorary Member of Warwick Lodge No. 16, West Warwick; was made an Honorary Member of Narragansett Bay Chapter No. 14, National Sojourners, on May 24, 1960.
In 1952 he was appointed Grand Representative of the Grand Lodge of Washington near the Grand Lodge of Rhode Island.
On April 12, 1960 he received official notification that the International Supreme Council of the Order of the DeMolay has designated him to receive the DeMolay Legion of Honor.
On June 13, 1960 the Grand Lodge of Nova Scotia honored him with the Erasmus J. Phillips Medallion for Distinguished Service.
