Grand Master 1944-1946

Herbert Arthur Crowell, Past Master of Roger Williams Lodge No. 32, Centredale. was elected and installed the ninetieth Most Worshipful Grand Master of the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons for the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, at the One Hundred and Fifty-Fourth Annual Communication held at Providence, on Monday May 15, A. L. 5944, A. D. 1944. He is the second member of Roger Williams Lodge No. 32 to be exalted to this honored position.

Born in Providence, Rhode Island. May 20, 1880, the son of Edwin A. and Hannah F. (Barker) Crowell, his early education was obtained in the public schools of this city, graduating from Classical High School in 1899. He then Studied Special Chemistry under Professor John Appleton of Brown University and is an honorary member of Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity at Brown University. On June 12, 1907 he was married to Miss Ina Atcherly of Providence and their union has been enriched by one son. Brother Rowland A. Crowell, who is a member and Past Master of Corinthian Lodge No. 27 and who was chosen by the Grand Master to serve as his Grand Marshal during his term of office.

There are two grandchildren, Rowland Atcherly, Jr., born September 28, 1939 and Suzanne, born April 10, 1946.

M. W. Brother Crowell comes from a long line of Crowells in America, his family having settled in what is now Yarmouth, Massachusetts; and they were one of the three original families who founded that town in 1639. He is a member of the Sons of American Revolution. Patriots and Founders of America, Rhode Island Historical Society and the British Empire Club of this city.

The Masonic Record of the Grand Master began in 1909, being raised a Master Mason in Roger Williams Lodge No. 32 on May 29. 1909, and was elected its Worshipful Master on May 22, 1915. Then again on the occasion of the Fiftieth Anniversary of that Lodge, he was elected Worshipful Master, for the second term, on May 23, 1925.

In the Capitular Rite, he holds membership in Providence Royal Arch Chapter. No. 1, R. A. M.

In Cryptic Bite, he is a member of Providence Council No. 1, R. & S. M.

In Christian Knighthood, he is a member of St. John's Commandery, No. 1. K. T. and served as its Eminent Commander in 1934.

In the A. A. S. Rite N. M. J. in the Valley of Providence, he holds membership in the four Branches of that Rite and in 1939-1940 served as Thrice Potent Master, Solomon's Lodge of Perfection, and is at the present time, Commander-in-Chief of the Rhode Island Consistory.

On September 27, 1944, the Grand Master received the 33rd Degree of the A. A. S. Rite of Freemasonry at Cleveland, Ohio.

On September 13, 1944. at Boston, Massachusetts, he was honored by the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts, with the presentation of the Henry Price Medal.

He was made Tall Cedar of Lebanon at sight in Massasoit Forest No. 112 on October 7, 1944. at Barrington, R. I.

On November 18, 1944, he was made a Prophet at sight in Moslem Grotto in Providence, R. I.

He also holds an Honorary Membership in Corinthian Lodge No. 27. and in Roosevelt Lodge, No. 42, both of Providence.

In Grand Lodge, he served as Grand Lecturer during 1935-193(1 and since that time, has served as D. D. G. M., of the several Masonic Districts, Grand Junior Warden, Grand Senior Warden, Deputy Grand Master respectively, until May 16th, when he was unanimously elected M. W. Grand Master.

Due to the governmental regulations, which were in force in May 1945, it was necessary to omit the Annual Communication of Grand Lodge, at which the annual election of officers was to be held for the ensuing year and it therefore became necessary for the Grand Master and his Board of Officers to serve in their offices a second term.

His term of office as Grand Master therefore covered a period of two years, the first time that this has happened since the years 1897 and 1898.

He is also a member of Palestine Temple A. A. O. N. M. S. He is a Past Dad of the Order of DeMolay, a member of the Past Masters Association and the Masonic Veterans of Rhode Island.

For twenty-nine years, he has been a member of the Vestry and Chapter of the Cathedral of St. John's (Episcopal) and is also a member of the Cathedral Corporation of Rhode Island.

In the business world, he is Secretary-Treasurer of the Manufacturers Refining Company located at 26-28 Ship Street in Providence and has been its manager since its inception in 1907.

Brother Crowell has been a deep student of Masonic tradition and custom, and his Masonic knowledge and his wide business experience and sagacity were of particular benefit to Grand Lodge, under the unusual conditions existing during his two-year administration.
