BIOGRAPHY
Solon Cameron was born June 12, 1880 in the old Lewis Bissell Mansion on East Grand Ave., St Louis, Mo. He graduated from Ashland Grade School and Central High School. In 1905 he graduated from Barnes Medical College. For eight years he associated with Dr. William Porter, a leading Lung and Throat Specialist in St Louis. Solon Cameron specialized in diseases of the chest.
At the beginning of World War I, he was a medical member of the Twenty-Second Ward Draft Board. Entering active service as a Captain on October 1, 1917, he served with distinction at Fort Benjamin Harrison, at Camp Greenleaf, and at Camp Wheeler. He was transferred to Camp Dix, New Jersey, in charge of heart and lung examination work and he was promoted to Major. He was discharged in July 1919.
Dr. Cameron was Surgeon for the St Louis Police Board from 1921-1925, a member of the Board of Education from 1931 to 1938. In August of 1929, he was appointed Physician for the Masonic Home of Missouri and served for several years.
Brother Cameron was raised July 31, 1909, in Missouri Lodge No 1 and served as Master in 1916, the centennial year of the Lodge. He was a member of the York Rite, the American Legion and the Missouri Lodge of Research. He was an enthusiastic member of the Missouri Lodge of Research and contributed liberally to the publications of the History of Missouri Lodge No 1, Volume II for the Transactions (1944). From September 1928 to September 1929 he served as DDGM of the 33rd Masonic District of Missouri.
He was appointed Grand Pursuivant in September 1938 and advanced to the Grand East in September 1946. During his term in office he attended 75 meetings of lodges and conferences in the State, issued 40 dispensations and rendered 31 decisions on Masonic Law.
The outstanding accomplishment of his administration was the complete revision of the by-laws.
On Monday, December 19, 1955, Brother Solon Cameron passed to his eternal reward in the Missouri Baptist Hospital. A Specific Communication of the Grand Lodge was opened Wednesday, December 21, 1955 by Most Worshipful Brother Richard O. Rumer, Past Grand Master, who conducted the Masonic Funeral Service in the Luption Chapel. Grand Master Cameron was laid to rest in Bellefontaine Cemetery.
