BIOGRAPHY

From Missouri Lodge of Research:

Orestes Mitchell Jr. was born in St. Joseph, Missouri on the 11th day of October, 1905. His father was Past Grand Master Orestes Mitchell. Orestes attended public schools in St. Joseph and then matriculated at the University of Missouri, Columbia earning his A.B. Degree in 1927 and his LL.B. degree in 1929. Prior to receiving his law degree he had been admitted to the Bar in 1928. After graduating he returned to St. Joseph and began to practice law in the Law Firm of Mitchell and Mitchell, his father being his partner.

During World War II, Brother Mitchell was Chairman of the Price Panel of Buchanan County, member of the War Ration Board and the U.S.O. He was also legal advisor to the Buchanan County Draft Board.

Brother Mitchell was made a Entered Apprentice on July 23, 1928, passed August 27, 1928 and raised December 15, 1928, receiving all the degrees in Charity Lodge No 331, with his father participating in the conferral of the degrees. He was elected Worshipful Master in December 1937. His year was saddened by the death of his father on April 19, 1938

In 1939 and 1940 Orestes Jr. served as DDGM of the 9th Masonic District and was appointed Grand Pursuivant in 1943 by Grand Master Woodruff. He was elected Grand Master on September 29, 1954.

He belongs to the Scottish Rite, St Joseph Lodge of Perfection No 6, Master in 1935, St Joseph Chapter Rose Criox No 4, Master in 1936, Albert Pike Council of Kadosh No 4, Commander in 1939 and St Joseph Consistory No 4, Master in 1943.

He belonged to the York Rite bodies in St Joseph, the Order of the Eastern Star, Moila Shrine, the Grotto,

The great campaign to raise funds for the new building and renovation of the Masonic Home was instituted in his administration, raising over $300,000.00 to start construction and modernization of the Home.

He had the privilege to dedicate the new Ararat Shrine Temple Building in Kansas City at the request of Imperial Potentate Frank S Land.
