BIOGRAPHY

From Missouri Lodge of Research:

Leroy Valliant was born at Moulton, Alabama, June 14, 1838. While being born in Alabama he spent most of his life in Mississippi. He attended school in Holly Springs, Miss, then entered the University of Mississippi graduating with a A.B. degree. He later received the degree of L.L.B. from the law department at Cumberland University. Valliant had four years of service in the Civil War, four years as Judge of the chancery court in Mississippi and ten years law practice in Memphis. Brother Valliant was a young man when the Civil War broke out and enlisted on the Confederate side and served as a Captain in the 22nd Mississippi Regiment and at the Battle of Shiloh he commended this regiment.

Judge Valliant moved to St Louis and practiced law, In 1886 he was elected Circuit Judge, reelected in 1892 and retained the office until 1898 when he was elected a Judge of the Supreme Court of Missouri, He was reelected in 1902 and served ten years longer, retiring from that office two months before his death.

He was initiated, passed and raised in Polar Star Lodge No 79, St Louis and served as Master in 1889. He was appointed Grand Orator in 1893 and named Grand Pursuivant in 1897. He was elected Grand Master in 1904.

He was a member of the York and Scottish Rites.

His death occurred at Greenville, Mississippi, March 3, 1913. Following his death his remains were taken to St Louis and buried, March 7, 1913 in Bellefontaine Cemetery, not far from other distingushed Missouri Freemasons.
