His activities in the Masonic world had, perhaps, pre: vented his acceptance of municipal office or activity in the political affairs of his city where, however, he was well and favorably known as a citizen and highly respected for his many virtues. He was stricken totally blind a month prior to his death and during that period, when confined. closely to his bed and under treatment for this affliction, he exhibited a rare degree of patience and cheerfulness which only ended with his sudden passing from earth at a time when it was hoped the trouble with his eyes had begun to yield to the treatment.
