MEMORIAL

From Proceedings, Page 1897-260:

E. WATERS BURR, son of Elijah and Mary (Sprague) Burr, was born in Hingham, Sept. 27, 1829. He married, Oct. 5, 1854, Lydia H. Hersey, who, with five sons, survives him.

After attending the public schools of his native town, at the age of fourteen years he became a clerk in a drygoods store in Hingham. His employer moved to Boston and continued in the same business. At his request Bro. Burr accompanied him, and here he laid the foundation of his business career. Later he entered the employ of J. Baker & Son, and in 1853 was, with Bro. Benjamin F. Brown, admitted to the firm. In 1855 the firm was dissolved and a new firm under the name of Burr, Brown & Co. was established. They were manufacturers of cord, tassels and upholstery trimmings, their factories being in Hingham. This firm — synonym of honest methods and reliable goods — continued until Bro. Burr's decease. Bro. Burr is perhaps best described by the word rectitude. He was straight in his line of opinion, straight in action and straight in principle. Bro. Burr was initiated in Old Colony Lodge, of Hingham, Jan. 13, 1857, and admitted a member thereof March 17, 1857. He was Worshipful Master of that Lodge in 1864, 1865 and 1866, and was elected Junior Grand Warden in December, 1869.

R. W. Bro. E. Waters Burr died at his residence in Hingham, Aug. 8, 1897, and his remains were buried with Masonic ceremonies by Old Colony Lodge.
