Right Worshipful Perley Emerson Miller was born in Newburyport on August 25, 1891, the son of Mitchell and Cassie (Ellis) Miller. He was educated in the public schools of Newburyport and lived there all his life.

"As a sheet metal worker, formerly employed in the Naval Shipyards, for many years he applied that trade for the D. Cashman Hardware Company in Newburyport, although he was self-employed during the past twenty-five years.

"Brother Miller received his Entered Apprentice Degree on November 10, 1919, was Crafted on December 8, 1919, and was Raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason on Januaty 26, 1920, in Saint Mark's Lodge of Newburyport. He served in all the stations in that Lodge from 1921, serving as its Master in 1935 and 1936. He was appointed District Deputy Grand Master for the Newburyport Tenth Masonic District in 1940 and 1941. He also served as the original speaking member of the Grand Lodge Education Committee, which he very ably served from 1938 to 1972. Appointed as Secretary for the Thirty-third Lodge of Instruction in 1931, he held that post until retiring in 1972.

"Right Worshipful Brother Miller was elected Junior Grand Warden of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts for the year 1956, and in March of that year he received the Henry Price Medal. He also served as Grand Representative to Tennessee from 1968 until his death.

He was a Charter Member of Emeth Lodge in Newburyport, received his Royal Arch Degree in King Cyrus Chapter on May 10, 1945; Order of the Temple in Newburyport Commandery No. 3 on November 15, 1945 and served as Sword Bearer, Junior and Senior Warden of that body. Brother Miller was also a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies in Haverhill; the Mount Calvary Chapter, Order of the Rose Croix at Lowell; Massachusetts Consistory and was President of the Newburyport Shrine Club and Director of the Masonic Temple Association in Newburyport for more than thirty years. In 1971 Brother Miller was presented his Fifty Year Veteran's Medal of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts.

"Right Worshipful Perley Emerson Miller was called to the Celestial Lodge Above on November 18, 1976 and is survived by his wife, Evelyn ( Leger) Miller and a son Donald Mitchell Miller and eight grandchildren.

"Services were held at the Elliott-Cashman Funeral Home in Newburyport with Worshipful and Reverend Frank R. Cutter of the First Church of Newburyport officiating. A Masonic Service was held by Saint Mark's Lodge with an honor guard provided by the Newburyport Commandery. Hundreds of his brethren and friends passed by in respect to the memory of the quiet dignity and gentleness that our late Brother possessed. All who came in contact with him will remember the cheerful and witty manner expressed by a man that was widely known in our Fraternity, which outside of his business and home were his chie{ concern. We shall truly miss him.
