HISTORY

Near the close of the year 1866, a group of zealous brethren ld by a Past Grand Master resident of South Kingstown petitioned for a Dispensation for a new Lodge to bear the name Hope. Dispensation was granted on January 21, 1867, and the first regular communication held March 25, 1867. The charter for Hope Lodge No. 25 was issued May 20, 1867 and the Lodge was constituted November 26, 1867, with appropriate public ceremonies.

One of the earliest acts of the new lodge was to establish a Charity Fund with a fixed fee to be paid quarterly by each member.

In 1880, Hope Lodge lost its lodge hall by fire and all its furnishings. Columbia Lodge of Odd fellows responded by offering the use of its Lodge Room without expense, and for the next year and a half, Hope Lodge gratefully accepted this hospitality.

Hope Lodge gave its assistance to the organization of Nestell Chapter, No. 6, Order of Eastern Star and to the formation of Unity Chapter No. 12, Royal Arch Masons, and has had most cordial fraternal relations with both throughout the years.

On January 10, 1968 Hope Lodge observed the successful completion of “A Century of Hope” with great pride in its heritage, deeply conscious of its trust and resolutely determined to support firmly and tenaciously and to cling to the principals and ideals that have so richly blessed and sustained it in the past. While a changing society has obviated many of the important functions performed by the earlier Lodge, our desire continues unabated to give Hope to the ill, the needy, the aging, and to our youth.
