HISTORY

The E.L. Freeman Lodge is the youngest of the four in Pawtucket as we recently celebrated our fiftieth anniversary (1976) amid such pomp-and-ceremonies as the Grand Lodge permitted. City and state officials were present at public official functions. Mementos bearing the insignias of Masonry and the Lodge were distributed to remain in Masonic homes forever.

The person whose name was adopted for our Lodge was a man of prestige, honor, and philanthropy. He was a Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Rhode Island, a governor of the state, a church superintendent, and an accredited businessman.

Our Lodge was the first in the Blackstone Valley to admit men of “foreign extractions” to its fold. A Jew and a Christian of non-English-speaking element were admitted in the early days after the Lodge was established.

The E. L. Freeman Lodge boasts the formation of two Fellow Craft Clubs, one when the Lodge was new and another after World War II was over. These clubs contributed immeasurably to the social life of the membership for many, many years. The flag pole outside the Temple is a Freeman Lodge donation to the Masonic Temple Company.

We surmounted difficulties and hardship. We gave Grand Lodge a Grand Master and two with the coveted Thirty-third degree.

Members of E.L. Freeman, as a group make a diverse society, yet speak the one language of charity and brotherly love. Masonry is centuries old and worldwide; yet, its principles make it shine and show its light in the whole civilized world. Some Masonic principles are Biblical, but no religion has ever attained the sublime degree of Brotherhood. Masonry’s banners flutter high under which the three greatest religions find harmony and its members fraternize freely.
