Martin Dickinson was the son of a long time Kansas City Mason. His father William Dickinson was raised in McDonald Lodge No 324, Independence, Mo., and affiliated with Temple Lodge No 299, Kansas City, Mo., in 1904. He was active in the Scottish Rite in Kansas City, being coronated a 33rd degree in 1915. For 40 years he was Wise Master in the 18th degree.

Martin was born in Kansas City, Missouri on April 26, 1906. Attended public schools in Independence and graduated in 1922. At the age of 16, then the minimum age for petitioning the Order of DeMolay, Martin became a member of the Independence Chapter. The Order had only been founded a year earlier. He served as Master Councilor and in 1943 received the DeMolay Legion of Honor.

Brother Dickinson attended Kansas City Junior College for two years before entering the University of Kansas, where he ad one additional year of liberal arts and three years of law school receiving the A.B. Degree in 1926 and the LL.B. degree in 1928. At Kansas he was a member of Delta Tau Delta and remained active in the national organization for many years, serving as National President in 1950.

Although he had another year of law school Martin was admitted to the Missouri Bar in 1927 and in June of 1928 he commenced active Practice of Law as a partner with his father,

On the morning of his 21st birthday, the future Grand Master of Missouri found that his father had surreptitiously placed a Masonic Petition beneath his breakfast plate. It became a family tradition. Martin Dickinson was raised in Country Club Lodge No 656 on April 27, 1937. He was one of two new members in that depression year. He served as Master in 1943. While serving as Master he was appointed DDGM. In 1944 he was elected to fill a vacancy on the Board of Directors of the Masonic Home of Missouri and did so until 1950. He again served on the Board from 1960-1964. He was appointed to the "line" by Grand Master Orestes Mitchell Jr, and elected and installed Grand Master in 1962.

Next to the Blue Lodge the Scottish Rite was a prime interest. He received the 4-32 degrees in the Valley of Kansas City on May 15, 1937, the KCCH on October 23, 1941 and was coroneted a 33rd degree on October 24, 1947.

He was a member of the York Rite, Kansas City Chapter No 28 RAM, Westport Council No 38 R&SM, Kansas City Commandery No 10 KT. He was a member of Mary Conclave Red Cross of Constantine, the Missouri Lodge of Research and Ararat Shrine.
