BIOGRAPHY

Edward Higbee was born at Ashland, Ohio, January 1, 1847. In the fall of 1849 they moved to Iowa where they purchases a farm of 640 acres near Iowa City. Disposing of this property they moved to Davenport,Iowa and from there to Schuyler County,

Young Edward attended the common schools of Johnson County, Iowa and later entered Iowa State University, He began teaching at the age of sixteen during the winter and working his dad's farm in the summer. In 1866, he was a law student at Bloomfield, Iowa under General John B. Weaver and was admitted to the bar in 1867. Soon afterwards he moved to Lancaster, Mo., and opened a law office. In 1920 he was elected to the Supreme Court of the State of Missouri to fill the unexpired term of Charles Faris. In 1923 he was appointed a Commissioner of the Supreme Court and reappointed in 1927.

He entered Masonry through Lodge of Love No 259, Lancaster, Mo., being initiated December 26, 1868, passed March 9 and raised March 27 of that year. He served as Master of the Lodge in 1971, 1874,1875, 1884, 1885, 1893 and 1901. He was appointed DDGL of the 1st Masonic District in 1894 and served continually until 1903. Following his removal to Kirksville he affiliated with Kirksville Lodge No 105. He was appointed DDGM of the 2nd Masonic District in 1906 and served until 1913. He served as a member of the Appeals and Grievances Committee and was chairman of the Jurisprudence committee under Grand Master Bigger. Higbee was appointed Grand Pursuivant in 1908 and regularly advanced to the station of Grand Master in 1916.

Brother Higbee was a York Rite Mason and a member of Moila Shrine, St. Joseph, Mo.

After a short illness of two weeks, his death occurred Saturday, February 16, 1929, in Kirksville, Mo. Funeral services were conducted in the Christian Church and Masonic Services were conducted by Dr. Corona H Biggs. Seven members of the Supreme Court acted as pallbearers. His remains were laid to rest in Highland Park Cemetery, at Kirksville, Mo.


Missouri Grand Masters
