BIOGRAPHY

Note: This biography was written when Brother Jamison was still alive. He died in 1926 and is buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri.

Most Worshipful Brother Dorsey Albert Jamison is first reported in the Grand Lodge annals at the Annual Communication of 1885, when he appeared as Junior Warden of Occidental Lodge No. 163. His first official recognition was in 1888, when he was appointed Deputy Grand Lecturer for the St. Louis District, reappointed in 1889, serving two years, also appointed District Deputy Grand Master, serving one year. At the session of 1891 he was appointed Junior Grand Deacon, followed by appointment as Senior Grand Deacon in 1892. In 1893 he was elected Junior Grand Warden, the following year Senior Grand Warden, in 1895 Deputy Grand Master, and at the Annual Communication of 1896 was elected Most Worshipful Grand Master.

Brother Jamison was born near Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, Tennessee, November 22, 1853. He was educated at Union University in Murfreesboro, and received his legal training in the St. Louis law department of Washington University, where he graduated in June, 1875. He at once began the practice of his chosen profession, in which he has attained distinction.

He petitioned Occidental Lodge No. 163, was elected, duly initiated, passed, and on the 24th of January, 1884, raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason. At the following election he was chosen Junior Warden, serving in that office during 1885; was elected and served as Senior Warden during 1886, advanced to the East for 1887 and re,elected, serving two terms.

The Capitular degrees were conferred upon him in St. Louis Royal Arch Chapter No. 8, where he was exalted March 31, 1886. He was soon after started in line, and was elected and presided as Excellent High Priest during 1891. He received the Cryptic degrees in Hiram Council No. 1, March 23, 1893. The Orders of Christian Knighthood were conferred upon him in St. Louis Commandery No. 1, Knights Templar, in 1886. He dimitted therefrom and affiliated with St. Aldemar Commandery No. 18, March 26, 1889.

The degrees, grades and orders, from the 4° to the 32", inclusive, were received by him in the bodies of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite in St. Louis in May, 1890. He was one of the organizers of Occidental Chapter, Order Eastern Star, No. 185, in 1889, the first Worthy Patron, and served a second term as such. He is also a member of Moolah Temple, A. A. O. N. M. S.

Dorsey Jamison was a native of Tennessee, born in Rutherford County, November 22, 1853. His education was received at Union University in Murfreesboro and his legal training in Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. where he graduated in 1875.

In 1881 he formed a partnership with Robert E. Collins under the name Collins and Jamison.

Brother Jamison began his journey into Freemasonry into Occidental Lodge No 163, St Louis where he was raised January 14, 1884. He served as Master of the Lodge in 1887 and 1888. He served the St Louis area as DDGM from 1888 to 1890. In 1891 he was appointed Grand Junior Deacon and was elected Grand Master in 1896.

He was a member of the York Rite and Moolah Shrine. He received his Scottish Rite degrees in St Louis in November 1889 and 1890. He became a KCCH October 1901 and was coroneted Inspector-Gereral Honorary in October 1905.

There were two Masonic institutions to which Brother Jamison renered distinctive service. First, the Masonic Home of Missouri in 1900, he became attorney for the Home and was elected director in 1901 serving until the time of his death in 1928. He was President of the St Louis Masonic Temple Association, which erected the present building on Lindell Boulevard.

His death occurred at Bethlehem Springs, Tenn, July 12, 1926 and funeral services were conducted in the Second Baptist Church, St Louis Mo., after which Masonic rites were given at Bellefontaine Cemetery, conducted by Brother William W. Martin, Grand Master.
