BIOGRAPHY

Note: This biography was written when Brother Dockery was still alive. He died in 1926 and is buried in Edgewood Cemetery in Chillicothe, Missouri.

Most Worshipful Alexander Monroe Dockery is represented as appearing in the Grand Lodge at the session of 1867 as Junior Warden, holding proxy of the Master of Jackson Lodge No. 82, Linneus, Missouri. Again in 1868 he represented his Lodge as Worshipful Master. At that session he was elected Junior Grand Warden and accredited as a resident of Chillicothe, Missouri. In 1869 he was advanced to the office of Senior Grand Warden. Again in 1879 he was elected Junior Grand Warden, in 1880 Deputy Grand Master, and in 1881 Most Worshipful Grand Master of Missouri Masons. He was succeeded in that office by Brother C. C. Woods.

Brother Dockery was born in Daviess County, Missouri, February 11, 1845. He attended the common schools of that day, completing his education in Macon Academy, at Macon, Missouri. He studied medicine, and graduated at the St. Louis Medical College in March, 1865; also attended lectures at Bellevue College, New York City, and Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, during the winter of 1865-6; practiced his profession at Chillicothe, Missouri, until January, 1874. In March, 1874, he abandoned his chosen profession and removed to Gallatin, Missouri, where he assisted in organizing the Farmers Exchange Bank, of which he was cashier until elected to Congress. He served as Representative in the Forty,eighth, Forty-ninth, Fiftieth, Fifty-first, Fifty-second, Fifty,third, Fifty-fourth and Fifty-fifth sessions of Congress, a term of sixteen years. He received the nomination of the Democratic party for Governor at the State Convention of 1900, was elected, and assumed the office January 14, 1901.

Brother Dockery was made a Mason in Jackson Lodge No. 82, at Linneus, Missouri, in 1866, and served as Worshipful Master in 1868; later affiliated with Daviess Lodge No. 116 and served as Master. He received the Capitular degrees in Lone Star Royal Arch Chapter No. 30, at Chillicothe, Missouri. Was Excellent High Priest of same. In the Grand Chapter he was Grand Captain of the Host in 1868, Grand Scribe in 1869 and again in 1880, Grand King in 1881, Deputy Grand High Priest in 1882, and Most Excellent Grand High Priest in 1883. He is a Past Commander of Kadosh Commandery No. 21, stationed at Cameron, Missouri.
