Grand Chaplain, 1918-1926

MEMORIAL

From Proceedings, Page 1926-52:

Rev. Bro. Chase was appointed Grand Chaplain December 27, 1918, and has served. continuously since.

Rev. Bro. Chase was born in Chelsea JuIy 12, 1858. He was graduated from Amherst CoIIege in 1880, and from the Hartford Theological Schooi in 1885, entering the Ministry of the Congregational Church. He held pastorates at Hampton, Lawrence, Wollaston, and Beverly. Owing to the condition of Mrs. Chase's health he resigned his pastorate in Beverly in the fall of 1925, but looked forward to the resumption of active work as soon as conditions would permit.

Rev. Bro. Chase took his degrees in Wollaston Lodge, becoming a member in 1901. He later affiliated with The Massachusetts Lodge in 1919, and with Shawmut Lodge in 1920. During his residence in Wollaston he was Chaplain of Wollaston Lodge, and he was Chaplain of The Massachusetts Lodge and of Shawmut Lodge from his afflliatiom to his cleath. His service as a Lodge Chaplain and as a Chaplain of the Grand Lodge was of the greatest service to the Fraternity. His personality was such as to call forth the sincere affection not only of his associates in office but of the membership generally of the Lodges which he served. His charges to newly raised. candidates were models of delightful form and memorable substance.

In addition to his Masonic service he was also Chaplain of the Society of the Cincinnati. Rev. Bro. Chase died after an illness of only a few hours on February 14th. Funeral services were held on February 17th, in the Congregational Church in Newton Highlands. A Masonic Burial Service was conducted by the Grand Lodge.

The passing of Bro. Chase brings to his associates in Grand Lodge great sorrow, tempered only by the delightful memories we cherish of his fellowship and service.
