BIOGRAPHY

James Alexander Tillinghast was born in Central Falls, Rhode Island, on January 27. 1889, the son of the late William K. and Annie Aborn Tillinghast. He attended the public schools of Providence, graduating from Hope High School; he then entered Mohegan Lake Military School, Peekskill, New York, where he remained for two years and then entered Williams College, graduating in 1910 with the degree of A. B. He then studied electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and later entered Harvard Law School from which he graduated in 1916 with the degree of L. L. B.

He was married on January 8, 1927, to Miss Madalyne Droz of Providence. They have one daughter, Elizabeth, who is a student at Wellesley College.

He is a member Of the Board of Directors of the Providence Chamber of Commeroe; a member of the Williams Club. New York City; the Cruising Club of America; Agawam Hunt Club of Rumford. Khode Island: and the University Club of Providence, he has always taken a keen interest in sailing, and for six years was navigator of one of the sailing craft in the New London-Bermuda races, having successfully piloted the winning boat in 1924.

During the time he was at College he served in the Rhode Island State Militia, and on May 31. 1917, enlisted for the World War as a Chief Petty Officer in the U. S. Naval Reserve. After serving no various vessels both at home and abroad lie was transferred to inactive duty on January 31, 1919, with the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade.

He was made a Mason in Saint John's Lodge No. 1, of Providence, in 1917, and affiliated with Overseas Lodge in 1920. He was appointed Junior Deacon when the Lodge was constituted, and elected Worshipful Master on November 11, 1924.

He was appointed a District Deputy Grand Master by Brother Winfield S. Solomon when he was Grand Master in 1927, since which time he has progressed through the various offices until his election on May 20, 1935, as Grand Master of Masons.

He is a member of Providence Royal Arch Chapter. No. 1; Providence Council Royal and Select Masters. No. 1; St. John's Commandery, No. 1, Knights Templars: Rhode Island Consistory. 32nd Degree. Scottish Rite; Palestine Temple Mystic Shrine; Past Monarch. Suhrab Grotto; and a Past Worthy Patron of Providence Chapter, No. 1, Order of the Eastern Star.

At the Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of Rhode Island, on May 18, 1936, he was presented with the Henry Price Medal by Most Worshipful Brother Claude L. Allen, Grand Master of Masons in Massachusetts.
