BIOGRAPHY

Charles Winsor Littlefield, the seventy-eighth Brother who has been called to lead the Craft in the Grand Jurisdiction of Rhode Island, was born in the town of Wells, Maine, mi the second day of September, 1874, and was the son of Moses F. and Abbey K. (Perkins) Littleficld. He was educated in the public schools of Wells, fitted for college at Berwick Academy, at South Berwick, Maine, ami attended Dartmouth College.

lie came to Rhode Island in May, 1895, and for six years had charge of the schools at Natick. lie left teaching to engage in the life insurance business and was associated with the New York Life Insurance Company. Upon the death of his father-in-law, Richard V. Browning, who had been engaged in the wholesale millinery business for many years in Providence, Brother Littlefield was appointed administrator of the estate and conducted the business for a period of three years. After selling out the millinery business, he studied law with the firm of Littlefield & Barrows, consisting of Nathan W. Littlefield and Chester W. Barrows, and was admitted to the practice of law on November, 1909.

Brother Littleficld was initiated, passed and raised in Warwick Lodge, No. 16, and was admitted to membership on September 6, 1900. In the Capitular Rite, he is a member of Landmark Chapter. No. 10, where he received the Royal Arch Degree on the 16th day of June, A. D. 1918. He was elected High Priest of that Chapter on October 8, 1928, and is the Grand Scribe in the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Rhode Island. The Cryptic Rite degrees he received in Narragansett Council. No. 6, R. & S. M.. and was knighted in St. John's Commandery, No. 1, on the 8th day of June, A. D. 1918. He became a member of the A. A. S. R. N. M. J., receiving his 32° in 1921. He was a charier member of Roosevelt Lodge, No. 42, in which he holds dual membership. He was Worshipful Master of his Lodge in 1921.

On the 17th day of May. A. D. 1920 he was appointed District Deputy Grand Master for the Seventh Masonic District by Most Worshipful Brother William I.. Sweet, and was elected Grand Master on the 21st day of May. A. D. 1934.

This year of service as Grand Master was devoted to the building up and strengthening of the fraternal bonds, not only among his brethren in Rhode Island, but between Rhode Island (Irand Lodge and its sister jurisdictions. A full neeount of his year's service is contained in his report published in the within proceedings. During his year he won the high regard of the Craft through his efforts towards the advancement of the high ideals of Freemasonry.

Brother Littlefield is a Baptist and actively interested in the work of the denomination in the Stale. He has been for some time the President of the Rhode Island Baptist State Convention and is a member of the Nalick Baptist Church at Natick, Rhode Island, and lias been for many years one of its earnest supporters.

In 1897 he married Mary A. Browning of Natick. They had four 
children: two sons. Dr. Frank B. and Richard W., who are both members 
of Warwick Lodge, No. 16; and two daughters, Camilla A. (deceased)
 and Marion, who is now a Sophomore at Connecticut College for Women
 in New London, Connecticut.
