BIOGRAPHY

Bertram Clarke, of Charity Lodge No. 23, A. F. & A. M., of Hope Valley, R. I., was elected and installed the one hundred first Most Worshipful Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of the Most Ancient and Honorable Society of Free and Accepted Masons for the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations at the One Hundred and Sixty-fifth Annual Communication held in Providence on Monday, May 21, A. L. 5956, A. D. 1956.

M. W. Brother Clarke was born in Brigus, Newfoundland, on August 21, 1904, son of Robert Munden Clarke and Leah Percy Clarke.

He was educated in Brigus, graduating from the Methodist Academy in 1920, and attended night school in Westerly, R. I.

He is in business for himself as a building contractor.

On May 4, 1927, he was married to Thelma Brown, and the union has been blessed with a son, Robert Nelson, and three grandchildren, Donna Jeanne, Dennis Robert, and Robert Nelson, Jr.

He is a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America.

M. W. Brother Clarke's Masonic record hegan on February 25, 1928 when he was initiated in Charity Lodge No. 23, Hope Valley, and on May 5, 1928 he was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason. He was elected Worshipful Master of his lodge on October 9, 1941.

He was appointed District Deputy Grand Master of the Sixth Masonic District on May 16, 1949 by M. W. Brother Howard B. Rice, and the following years was appointed to a similar position in other districts. On May 18, 1953 he was elected R. W. Junior Grand Warden; R. W. Senior Grand Warden on May 17, 1954; and R. W. Deputy Grand Master on May 10, 1955.

He holds membership in the four bodies of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Providence, and is at present 2nd Lt. Commander in the Consistory.

He is also a member of Franklin Chapter No. 7, R. A. M.. of Hope \'alley, and served as High Priest from November, 1943 to October. IMS; is a Past Patron of Hope Chapter No. 4, Order of Eastern Star, of Hope Valley: is a Knight Templar of Narragansett Commandery No. 27, of Westerly; and holds membership in Palestine Temple, A. A. O. N. M. S.

On October 13, 1956, he was made a Tall Cedar at Sight in Westerly Forest No. 717, Tall Cedars of Lebanon; on October 23, 1956, he was made an Honorary Member of Narragansett Bay Chapter No. 14, National Sojourners; an Honorary Member of Doric Lodge No. 38, of Cranston, on December 17, 1956; an Honorary Member of the Connecticut Past Masters' Association on December 29, 1956; and an Honorary Member of Pawcatuck Lodge No. 90, of Pawcatuck, Connecticut, on April 11, 1957.

On March 8, 1957, he was designated by The International Supreme Council of the Order of DeMolay to receive the Honorary Legion of Honor of the Order of DeMolay.
