Grand Master, 1864-1866

BIOGRAPHY

From Biographies of Past Grand Masters, 1821-1901, by the Grand Lodge of Missouri:

Most Worshipful Brother John Fletcher Houston is first recorded as a member of the Grand Lodge at the Annual Communication held at Lexington, Missouri, in 1847; he represented Wakenda Lodge No 52. Later his membership was transferred to Richmond Lodge No. 57, at Richmond, Missouri, which he served several years as Master. He was elected Junior Grand Warden in 1857, and Senior Grand Warden in 1858. In 1864 he was chosen Most Worshipful Grand Master, and re-elected in 1865. He was Grand Lecturer in 1866. His successor as Grand Master was Dr. John D. Vincil.

It is impossible to obtain anything reliable as to his early private life or Masonic history. In Capitular Masonry he was a shining light. He was a charter member of Cyrus Royal Arch Chapter No.36, at Richmond, Missouri, and the first Excellent High Priest. In the Grand Chapter he was elected Grand Scribe in 1857, Deputy Grand High Priest in 1858, re-elected in 1859, and elected Most Excellent Grand High Priest in 1869.

He died in St. Louis, December 5, 1870, in his forty-seventh year, and was buried at Richmond, Missouri, where he had long resided. M. W. Brother Thomas K. Garrett, who was at that time Grand Master, performed the funeral rites.
