Most Worshipful Brother John Fletcher Houston is first recorded as a member of the Grand Lodge at the Annual Communication held at Lexington, Missouri, in 1847; he represented Wakenda Lodge No 52. He was a charter member of Cyrus Royal Arch Chapter No.36, at Richmond, Missouri, and the first Excellent High Priest. In the Grand Chapter he was elected Grand Scribe in 1857, Deputy Grand High Priest in 1858, re-elected in 1859, and elected Most Excellent Grand High Priest in 1869.

Most Worshipful Brother John Fletcher Houston is first recorded as a member of the Grand Lodge at the Annual Communication held at Lexington, Missouri, in 1847; he represented Wakanda Lodge No. 52. Later his membership was transferred to Richmond Lodge No. 57, at Richmond, Missouri, which he served several years as Master. He was elected Junior Grand Warden in 1857, and Senior Grand Warden in 1858. In 1864 he was chosen Most Worshipful Grand Master, and re-elected in 1865. He was Grand Lecturer in 1866. His successor as Grand Master was Dr. John D. Vincil.

He died in St. Louis, December 5, 1870, in his forty-seventh year, and was buried at Richmond, Missouri, where he had long resided. M. W. Brother Thomas K. Garrett, who was at that time Grand Master, performed the funeral rites.

John Houston was born in Fleming County Ky June 28, 1824 and died in St Louis on December 5, 1870.

One of the most brilliant of our Grand Masters, elected Grand Master in 1864 and again in 1865. He was initiated in Livingston Lodge No 51, Glasgow Mo on March 7, 1846, passed March 28, 1846 and raised April 1, 1846.

He first appeared at Grand Lodge at a special communication in Lexington in 1847 and acted as Grand Secretary at the laying of the cornerstone of the Masonic College.

He was District Deputy Grand Master of the 4th district in 1855. After serving as Grand Master he recommended the lecture system as a means of communicating the ritual and was appointed Grand Lecturer in 1866.

Brother Houston was equally active in the York Rite being elected Grand High Priest in 1858 and 1859. He served as High Priest of Lexington Chapter No 10, charter member and first High Priest of George Washington Chapter No 24, Carrollton, Missouri, and a charter member and first High Priest of Cyrus Chapter No 36 at Richmond

Grand Master Houston died on December 5, 1870 in St Louis and is buried in the Richmond Cemetery.
