His love of life and his devotion to family, friend and brother seemed to always put him in the center of whatever action was taking place. Every endeavor was of paramount importance to Bob, whether it was being a member of a committee or the Master of the Lodge, Grand Marshal, commander-in-chief or the Grand Secretary. His desire was always to accomplish as much as possible in the least amount of time. Perhaps, in retrospect, this devotion to family, work and duty was due to the fact that there was so much that he had to accomplish in a limited space of time. cut off in the midst of his usefulness, our beloved Brother was called to the celestial Lodge above on Sunday May, 12, 1996, at Portsmouth, Rhode Island, doing one of those things which he loved best, boating. FROM TROWEL, 1996

From TROWEL, Fall 1996, Page 27:

1943-1996

He was a man of diverse interests; whether building an automobile kit and driving around town in it, certainly boating, demonstrating a green thumb with his potatoes, repairing an engine, developing a computer system, racing a motor vehicle, building a structure or cooking a meal for a multitude. He had expertise in so many pursuits and learned by doing. He was unafraid to undertake the difficult and had a work ethic which was the envy of most. He was never reluctant to shed his coat and "pitch in." His business acumen was based on hard work and he became expert in his many endeavors, whether in the family enterprise, real estate management, the laundry business or as Grand Secretary or Chief Operating Officer of the Grand Lodge.

Born on January 25, 1943, in Jamaica Plain, he was educated in the Brookline Public Schools, and at an early age became associated with the family plumbing contracting business in association with his brothers. Brother Patey was raised in Brookline Lodge in 1964, and served as Worshipful Master in 1970, and as Secretary of the Lodge in 1971. He was District Deputy Grand Master of the Brighton Fifth Masonic District in 1976 and 1977, Grand Sword Bearer in 1978-1980, and Grand Marshal in 1981-1983. He was elected Senior Grand Warden for the year 1984, and was awarded the Joseph Warren Distinguished Service Medal in 1980, and the Henry Price Medal in 1981. He was elected Grand Secretary on December 27, 1993, and served in that office until his death.

He was a Charter Member of The Masters Lodge and served as its Worshipful Master in 1989. He was also appointed Proxy from Caribbean Naval Lodge at the Panama Canal. He was a member and Past High Priest of St. Andrew's Royal Arch Chapter, a member of Boston Council, Royal and Select Masters, and a member, Past Commander and Recorder of St. Bernard Commandery No. 12, Knights Templar. Brother Patey was a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies in the Valley of Boston and a Past Commander-in-Chief of Massachusetts Consistory. He was created a Sovereign Grand Inspector General, 33°, Honorary Member of the Supreme Council on August 29, 1989, in Pittsburgh.

He was a member of St. Matthew's and Bay State Conclaves, Red Cross of Constantine; Damascus Tabernacle, Holy Royal Arch Knight Templar Priests; former Secretary of Massachusetts College and former Grand Secretary General of the Masonic Rosicrucian Society in the United States.

He was a singular Grand Secretary in his friendly and helpful manner always looking for ways to help with a problem rather than compounding it. He was a flawless ritualist, exceptional in his delivery and sincerity.

Brother Patey drowned on Sunday, May 12, 1996, in a tragic boating accident at his Summer property in Portsmouth, RI, while putting a dinghy on a mooring in Mount Hope Bay on the Sakonnet River.

A Memorial Service was held at the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum of Our National Heritage in Lexington on May 21, 1996, and conducted by Rev. and R. W. Oscar A. Guinn, Jr. and M. W. J. Philip Berquist. The overflow attendance was a great tribute to the memory of Right Worshipful Robert Collier Patey. He is survived by his widow, Trish; two children, Chrissy and Andy; and three brothers: Ed, Stan and Rick.

From the Memorial Service Program, May 21, 1996, at the Museum of Our National Heritage, Lexington:<br by M.W. J. Philip Berquist.

We do celebrate the life of Robert Collier Patey today. Although all too short, it was a full life and one of contribution to all who knew Bob in the many capacities and enterprises in which he was involved. He paved the way for many rather than erecting roadblocks, for he was always willing to help and sought the way in which he could be of assistance, rather than stating this or that couldn't be done. Hie was a man of divers interests, whether it be building an automobile kit and driving around town in it, certainly boating, demonstrating a green thumb with his potatoes, repairing an engine, developing a computer system, racing a motor vehicle, building a structure or cooking a meal for a multitude. He had expertise in so many pursuits and learned by doing. He was unafraid to undertake the difficult and had a work ethic which was the envy of most He was never reluctant to shed his coat and pitch in." His business acumen was based on hard work and he became expert in his many endeavors, Whether in the family enterprise, real estate management, the laundry business or as Grand Secretary or Chief Operating Officer of the Grand Lodge.

Bob was a very moral man, strong principled, and always faithful to his own high standards. His chess game was thoughtful and deliberate and although he claimed to b an outstanding cribbage player, several of us could best him in that game of great skill. His golf prowess was somewhat questionable only because he was a southpaw, but he did achieve a certain skill with the three iron in driving away the snakes in Nassau. He did have to buy back his own golf balls there which he had lost in the jungle on either side of the fairway and which had been retrieved by the natives before we had finished the round.

His love of and devotion to Freemasonry in all its facets was unsurpassed. A member for over 30 years in the family tradition, he served as Master of Brookline Lodge, District Deputy Grand Master on the other side of the District, Grand Sword Bearer, the best of Grand Marshals, Senior Grand Warden, Grand Secretary. Outstanding in every office. J am certain he is now advising on protocol and overseeing some construction project of the Grand Architect.

(2) e was the recipient of the Henry Price Medal of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts, the nighest award given by that august body. He was an exceptional and flawless ritualist and delivered Masonic verbiage in a meaningful manner with sincerity and feeling which was most impressive.

A past High Priest in the Royal Arch Chapter, Past Commander and Recorder of St. Bernard Commandery, Past Secretary General of the Masonic Rosicrucian Society of the United States, former Chairman of the DeMolay Foundation of Massachusetts, Past Master of The Masters Lodge, Past Commander-in-Chief of Massachusetts Consistory, Bob was a Tlurty-third Degree Mason. He was for over twenty years Secretary of The Split Fifth and they are still waiting for his first report.

May the loss that Trish and Chrissy and Andy and Ed and Stan and Rick have suffered be at least somewhat lessened by the knowledge that the void which can never be completely filled is shared by Bob's multitude of friends and brothers. Amen So mote it be.

Unpublished Memorial by Wor. Bro. Gordon Neal Matheson of Norumbega & Brookline Lodge, May 1996:

On Sunday, May 12, 1996 our Grand Secretary was suddenly called from labor.

Right Worshipful Robert C. Patey is missing and presumed drowned in a boating accident in Rhode Island. This is a staggering blow to his family, to his friends, and to the Craft in Massachusetts.

Right Worshipful Patey practiced daily Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth. He treated all alike. Whether the Brother was a Grand Master or the youngest Entered Apprentice he was treated with courtesy and respect. He well remembered and used the lessons of those useful implements that are the focus of our teachings.

I could not attempt to list all of Right Worshipful Patey's stations as I am sure to miss one or two. He was a Past Master of Brookline Lodge. He was responsible for the uniting of Brookline Lodge with Norumbega Lodge in 1984.

I will miss his cheery greetings. He always took time out of his busy day to talk to a Junior Officer when requested. My last vision of him was walking out of the dining hall in the Newtonville Masonic Hall after our Lodge's 75th Anniversary dinner on Saturday. He had our gifts in hand and was thanking everyone involved for a splendid day. Twelve hours later he was taken to the celestial Lodge above.

A memorial service has been scheduled for next Tuesday at the Museum of Our National Heritage in Lexington, Massachusetts at 10:00am.

Though he was struck down in the midst of his usefulness the sweet remembrance of his virtues shall last until time shall be no more.
