JAMES E. McCREERY 1831-1913

Junior Grand Warden, 1913

MEMORIAL

From Proceedings, Page 1913-158:

It is indeed a sad duty to record the death of one with whom we have been intimately associated both in social and Masonic life.

James Edward McCreery was born in Stockport, England, Sept. 21, 1831, the son of Charles and Sarah Day McCreery and died March 16, 1913. At the age of seven years he began work in a cotton mill in his native town and remained there for nine years. At the age of seventeen he left England and settled in Fall River where he again became actively engaged in the cotton industry and in a short time became overseer of weaving in the Anawan Mill. In 1863 he severed his connection with that corporation and accepted a similar position in the Granite Mill which had been completed. In 1865 he became superintendent of this mill. Through his integrity and conscientious service he won the esteem and confidence of all who knew him. Under his direction two more mills were added, completing a plant which is capitalized at one million dollars. Ia 1895, after thirty years of continuous service for this corporation, he retired and was succeeded by his eldest son, Thomas H. McCreery.

Brother McCreery was a member of St. Paul's Methodist Episcopal Church and served as steward, Sunday School superintendent and member of the Board of Trustees. He was a director in the Troy Co-operative Bank and the Masonic Hall Association of Fall River.

His Masonic affiliations were as follows: He was initiated Entered Apprentice Jan. 15, 1869, passed to Fellow Craft Feb. 26, 1869, and was made a Master Mason March 26, 1869, in Mount Hope Lodge. He was elected Worshipful Master 1886 and 1887; was District Deputy Grand Master in 1894 and 1895 (Twenty-sixth Masonic District), and was Junior Grand Warden in 1899. Received his Mark Master's Degree in Fall River Royal Arch Chapter Jan. 31, 1870; received his Past Master's Degree Feb. 14, 1870; received his Most Excellent Master's Degree Feb. 14, 1870; was made Royal Arch Mason Feb. 28, 1870; was elected High Priest 1897 and 1898; received Super Excellent Degree March 2, 1875, in Fall River Council, and was Thrice Illustrious Master in 1890 and 1891; received the Order of the Temple June 18, 1870, in Godfrey DeBouillon Commandery of Fall River, and was Eminent Commander in 1890 and 1891. He received the Scottish Rite degrees in Boston Lodge of Perfection April 7, 1893, Giles F. Yates Council Princes of Jerusalem April 14, 1893, Mount Olivet Chapter Rose Croix April 28, 1893, and Massachusetts Consistory April 28, 1893. He was demitted from all the Scottish Rite bodies in 1906.

On Sept. 3, 1856, he married Margaret Ann Ramsbottom who died in March, 1901. Five children were born, four of whom survive him.

An enthusiastic and optimistic temperament, which became contagious, was & most important factor in his business, social, and religious activities and contributed largely to the attainment of desired results. The compulsory retirement from such labors during the later years of his long life was a source of constant regret to him, and also in no small degree to his associates.

The memory of his sterling merit and worth will long remain with those who knew him best.

Respectfully submitted by the Committee,
Albert F. Dow,
William Ridings,
John Friar.
