FROM PROCEEDINGS, SEPTEMBER 1913

From Proceedings, Page 1913-286:

R.W. Bro. George Ferdinand Walker was born in Westbrook, Me., Feb. 15, 1840, and died in Monrovia, Cal., June 30, 1913.

Bro. Walker received his education in the public schools of Turner, Me. He became a resident of Stoughton, Mass., in 1857 where he soon engaged in the last business, and the successive firms of Walker & Dale, Walker & Phinney, and George F. Walker did a very successful business. During the year 1892 Le sold out his business and afterwards associated himself with his brother in the Brockton Stay Company; failing health, however, caused his retirement. In 1908 he removed to Monrovia, Cal., hoping to regain his health but found it a vain effort.

He became a member of Rising Star Lodge in 1865 and served as its Worshipful Master in 1869, 1870, and 1874. He was appointed District Deputy Grand Master for 1889, 1890, and 1891, and was elected Senior Grand Warden of the Grand Lodge for 1895.

He received his Royal Arch Degree in Mount Zion Chapter Feb. 15, 1867, and served as High Priest in 1876, 1877, and 1878, and was appointed District Deputy Grand High Priest for 1888, 1889, and 1890 and was elected Grand King for 1892. He received his Super Excellent Degree in Brockton Council Jan. 26, 1888, and served as Thrice Illustrious Master during 1904 and 1905. He received the Order of the Temple in Bay State Commandery Jan. 18, 1877, and served as Eminent Commander in 1891 and 1892.

He was a life member of Boston Lodge of Perfection, Giles F. Yates Council Princes of Jerusalem, Mount Olivet Chapter Rose Croix, Massachusetts Consistory S.P.R.S., Thirty-second Degree, a member of Aleppo Temple, Nobles of the Mystic Shrine.

Brother Walker married in 1862 Clementine A. Ames of Stoughton, their union being a very happy one. They were very devoted to each other, their home being an ideal one where they by every effort strove to make happy everyone who entered their portals. No children blessed their union, but their loving and affectionate nature prompted them to adopt a daughter on whom they poured out their wealth of love. Mrs. Walker passed away in November, 1912, and her loving husband never recovered from this deep sorrow. It was his desire to return to Stoughton and bring the remains of his beloved wife with him, but before he could accomplish his desire he passed on to the great beyond.

Your Committee will close with a quotation from a tribute published in a local paper: "George F. Walker. Rugged, honest, consistent faithfulness and a heart overflowing with kindness and sympathy, were the chief attributes of his nature. In his business he was a stickler for square dealing and right methods. As a citizen he was loyal to his town: a good word and a generous support for all movements for public good was-never sought in vain. As a neighbor and friend he was loved and respected; nobility of character was exemplified in his thoughts, words, and actions.

Respectfully submitted,
Henry J. Mills,
Oscar A. Marden,
George H. Dears.
