Right Worshipful George David Robertson, past Senior Grand Warden of the Grand Lodge of Masons in Massachusetts, died suddenly at his work on February 21, 1955, in Worcester.
Right Worshipful Brother Robertson was born February 14, 1885, at Pine Tree, Nova Scotia, the son of the late Daniel and Elizabeth (Anderson) Robertson. He was educated at the New Glasgow Public School and the Truro Academy, Truro, Nova Scotia. He came to the United States in the early 1900's, settling in Providence and vicinity, and became engaged in the manufacture of jewelry. He moved to Worcester in1901 and joined the Moulton Jewelry Company, of which concern he was the President and Treasurer at the time of his death.
His funeral was held on Wednesday, February 23rd, at the First Baptist Church in Worcester and was conducted by the Reverend Gordon M. Torgersen with hundreds of mourners in attendance. Rev. Mr. Torgersen's eulogy of Right Worshipful Brother Robertson cited him as a man whose life was dominated by his devotion to God and to man, one who always had a kind or generous word to say to others. Quiet and unassuming, always working in the background, he loved people and wanted to be with them and to serve them.
Right Worshipful Brother Robertson was active in the civil life of his community, having been a former member of the Worcester City Council. He was at one time a Trustee of the Worcester Municipal Auditorium and a charter member of the Worcester Kiwanis Club and its President in 1946. He was keenly interested in youth activities and was a former President of the Camp Fire Girls Organization. His love of music was exemplified by his having been a Past President of the Worcester Civic Music Association. He was also an entertainer of note throughout New England with his Scotch stories and music. He was active in his church, The First Baptist Church of Worcester, serving on the reception committee and music committee and as a Deacon.
His great devotion was to his Masonry which he lived with all his heart. He was elected to receive his degrees in Morning Star Lodge, Worcester, in 1914. He served as its Worshipful Master in 1923 and was District Deputy Grand Master for the Brookfield 21st Masonic District in 1935-1936. He was a Charter Member and first Worshipful Master of Rose of Sharon Lodge of Worcester in 1929, having been instrumental in its institution. He was Senior Grand Steward in 1940 and was Senior Grand Warden in 1947. He served on the Education Committee since 1942 and was Grand Representative of the United Grand Lodge of Germany since 1952.
He belonged to all the York Rite Bodies in Worcester, and was Master of Hiram Council, R. & S.M., in i931. He was a member of Stella Chapter, O.E.S., Worcester, and of Aleppo Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S., Boston. He was particularly active in Scottish Rite Masonry, belonging to the three Bodies in Worcester, and to Massachusetts Consistory in Boston. He was Most Wise Master of Lawrence Chapter of Rose Croix in 1950-1951. He was elected Honorary member of the Supreme Council, 33°, in 1952.
He also served three years in the Massachusetts State Guard and was in Boston for two months during the police strike with the State Guard.
His wife, Frances (Kyes) Robertson, and three children, George D. Robertson, Jr., Mrs. Miriam Smith, Mrs. Frances Amidon, and six grandchildren survive him. Interment was in Rural Cemetery, Worcester.
