Right Worshipful Carl Russell MacKenney was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts, on May 26, 1904, the son of Arthur G. and Lillian (Ruggels) MacKenney. He was educated in the public schools of Revere and Norwood, completing his professional training by taking specialty courses at Wentworth Institute and Northeastern University. He received his early training in the printing business at the Norwood Press and was later employed by Everett Print, Inc., of Boston. In 1940, he purchased the well-known printing plant and became its President and Treasurer. He semi-retired about 10 years ago but continued to be active as a salesman for various printing concerns until his final illness.
In 1928, he was united in marriage to Lillian Letts of Norwood who predeceased him in 1989. He is survived by their three daughters, Carol L. Packad and Lois M. Johnson, both of Westwood, and Janice R. Partridge of Norwood; 13 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
Right Worshipful Brother MacKenney was active in the affairs of the Islington Community Church and the church Men's Club.
He was for many years a ham radio operator and a well-known member of the Norfolk County Radio Association.
His Masonic record was long and distinguished. He was raised a Master Mason in Orient Lodge on January 9, 1928, was appointed Lodge Marshal in 1944 and then proceeded through the line offices, serving as Worshipful Master in 1950. His outstanding abilities were immediately recognized coming to the attention of M.W. Thomas S. Roy, who appointed him District Deputy Grand Master for the Hyde Park 25th Masonic District for the years 1951 and 1952. Brother MacKenney was elected Senior Grand Warden for the year 1956 during the administration of M.W. Whitfield W. Johnson, who bestowed upon him the Henry Price Medal for distinguished Masonic service. He was appointed Grand Representative of the United Grand Lodge of Gemany, near the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts, a position he held for over three decades.
Brother MacKenney was exalted in Hebron Chapter, R.A.M., Norwood, January 28, 1944; greeted in Hyde Park Council, R. & S.M., of Hyde Park, May 6, 1948, and was knighted in Temple Commandery No. 48, K.T. on December 9, 1944. He later affiliated with St. Andrew's Chapter, Boston Council and Boston Commandery No. 2, K.T. where he served as Eminent Commander in 1973-74.
In January, 1948, he joined Aleppo Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S. and soon became an active member in the Second Platoon of the Arab Patrol. Here again, his leadership talents were soon recognized and he was selected a Divan Officer. He was elected Potentate on January 21, 1966, and at the time of his death was the senior Past Potentate.
Brother MacKenney completed the degrees of the Scottish Rite in the Valley of Boston, September 24, 1951, and for a number of years took part in the degree presentations.
He was also a former member of Court No. 103, Royal Order of Jesters of Boston and Samoset Chapter No. 109, Order of the Eastern Star of Norwood where he served as Worthy Patron in 1957 and 1961.
Right Worshipful Brother MacKenney passed away April 6, 1992 at his home in Westwood as he had wished. A memorial service was held at the Islington Community Church on April 8, 1992, with all branches of the Masonic Fraternity well represented. The Rev. Matthew Arnett, Pastor of the church, officiated with the eulogy given by Brother MacKenney's doctor, Peter Kevordial. Interment took place in the New Westwood Cemetery, Westwood, Massachusetts.
Brother MacKenney was a devoted family man, committed churchman, enthusiastic Mason, proud Shriner and a personal friend.
