From Proceedings, Page 1957-39:

Born in Bellows Falls, Vermont, December 31, 1883
Died in Cambridge, Massachusetts, February 20, 1957

James Arthur Gibson was the son of Clement H. C. and Stella V. (Clayton) Gibson. At an early age Brother Gibson's family took up residence in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, where he received his public school education. At the age of sixteen, he enlisted in the United States Navy as an Apprentice Seaman and was honorably discharged five years later with the rank of Quartermaster Second Class. Subsequent to his service with the United States Navy, he spent a year at the Bryant & Stratton Commercial School and immediately following this, in 1905, he entered the employ of the Simplex Wire and Cable Company of Cambridge as a bookkeeper.

Brother Gibson's entire business life was spent with the Simplex Wire and Cable Company, and in 1955, at the time of his retirement, he was Vice President, Assistant Secretary and Treasurer, and a member of the Board of Directors. In most of Brother Gibson's adult life he resided in West Somerville and in Cambridge, where he was a devoted and interested leader in the religious and civic life of his community as evidenced by the positions of trust which he held in many different organizations.

For over fifty years Brother Gibson has been a faithful and able churchman. His contributions to the College Avenue Methodist Church during this long period of time have been outstanding. His work and his assignments have been carried out in a calm and unassuming manner, but at the same time, with great knowledge, leadership and-devotion to duty.

In 1915 he married Ethel Alma Ray, who with a son, Edwin Ray Gibson, survives him.

Brother Gibson was an enthusiastic and devoted Mason, exemplifying at all times a true spirit of friendship and love for his fellow man. He was raised a Master Mason in Somerville Lodge on March 15, 1920, and served as its Worshipful Master in 1925 and 1926. In Grand Lodge he was Grand Sword Bearer in 1928, District Deputy Grand Master of the Arlington Sixth Masonic District in 1929 and 1930, Senior Grand Warden in 1935, and in 1935, was the recipient of the Henry Price Medal. Brother Gibson received the Royal Arch Degree in Somerville Royal Arch Chapter on January 6, 1921, the Super Excellent Degree in Orient Council on June 8, 1921, and the Order of the Temple in DeMolay Commandery, Knights Templar, on March 22, 1922. In the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, he received the degrees in Boston Lafayette Lodge of Perfection on February 4, 1938, in Giles F. Yates Council, Princes of Jerusalem on February 11, 1938, in Mount Olivet Chapter of Rose Croix on February 18, 1938, and in Massachusetts Consistory on February 25, 1938.

The many positions of honor and trust, not only in the Masonic Fraternity, but in business and in religious and community life, to which Brother Gibson was chosen, were filled with conspicuous ability and carried with them the respect and esteem of his associates in every phase of his useful and friendly life.

On February 23, funeral services were held at the College Avenue Methodist Church in West Somerville, attended by a very large gathering of his Masonic Brethren and numerous neighbors and friends.

His passing leaves a void in our hearts, but the memory of his friendship will remain with us always.
