BARNSTABLE 15TH DISTRICT

Formed in 1867

NOTES

REPORT, FEBRUARY 1878

From Liberal Freemason, Vol. I, No. 11, February 1878, Page 344:

FIFTEENTH DISTRICT. This district is in charge of W. Bro. Russell Matthews, of Barnstable, District Deputy Grand Master, who is manifesting a commendable zeal in the discharge of his official duty. It is well known that in years past some of the Lodges on the Cape have been at considerable cost of time and money to perfect themselves in the work and lectures of the several degrees; but this year it was deemed advisable by the Deputy to assemble all the Lodges in the district in a convenient locality, and have the work exemplified during the day in the presence of one of the Grand Lecturers.

On the evening of January 16, the officers of DeWitt Clinton Lodge, in Sandwich, were installed by the District Deputy, and the Second Degree was worked under the instruction of Charles M. Avery, Gr. Lecturer, and, also, on the day following, in a manner to reflect credit on the Worshipful Master, Wm. A. Nye, and associate officers.

The First Degree was worked by an organization made up on the morning of the 17th, Worshipful Brother Hamilton, of Chatham, in the East. As was to be expected, the Brethren thus summoned to work were placed at a disadvantage; nevertheless, the experience and instruction gained will be of much service to them.

The Third Degree was worked by Pilgrim Lodge, of Harwich, and was very creditable to Worshipful Master Hamar and officers of the Lodge.

The various Lodges provided for themselves at the hotel, and at the close of the week a bountiful collation was served to all the Brethren by Dc Witt Clinton Lodge, whose officers and members are highly spoken of by the visitors for their thoughtful hospitality. There are eleven Lodges in this district, whose names, year of being chartered, and location, are as follows: King Hiram, 1796, Provincetown; Fraternal, 1801, Hyannis; Social Harmony, 1823, Warelam; Mount Horeb, 1855, West Harwich; De Witt Clinton, 1856, Sandwich; Pilgrim, i860, South Harwich; James Otis, 1866, Barnstable; Adams, 1866, Wellfleet; Howard, 1870, South Yarmouth; Mariners', 1871, Cotuit; Saint Martin's, 1873, Chatham.

These several Lodges completed the labors of the day, were pleasantly refreshed, and returned by rail to their several homes, with many pleasant memories of a well-spent day.
