It's also a game that looks more complicated than it is; in essence there are three commodities: cows, employees, and cold hard cash. You need better cows in your deck than you started with; you need to hire cowboys, engineers, and laborers to get those cows / move your train / build buildings; and you need money to do all of it. End game objectives are part of the equation, but we haven't seen them play a huge role - there never seems to be time.

DESCRIPTION

This is another game we first encountered at the Gathering. It's a deck-building, rondel-like game with a number of interlocking mechanisms; it's an example of a game that is extremely hard to teach because you don't know where to begin. Still, Quinton Smith did a pretty good job of it on Shut Up and Sit Down, and also covered the expansion. It's because of the SU&SD guys that we have added "You moseying bastard" to our vernacular.

We like this game a lot, though it's clear that we've not explored all the strategies. Probably the most important lesson for new players to learn is, hell yes, this is a race, and there is a point at which you have to speed up or get left behind.

The major expansion to the game adds a lot of interesting stuff, including extra draw/discard tokens, a revised station board divided into several sections, player buildings, and lots of new options that help reward more deliberate play. To really succeed you need to build things up a little more; the penalty for delivering a load of crap to Kansas City is more serious, and the additional action to place buildings slows the game down somewhat.

The new board overlays the stations on the top of the base board and really changes the dynamics of cow delivery. Though we haven't played it as much as the original, the impression is that you ignore the new areas of the board at your peril, and in a competitive game you can't win without focusing some of your attention on them.

It's hard to tell whether this was a part of the original design and stripped out, or whether this is an elaboration that has been tacked on; the mechanisms merge in seamlessly, but I don't know whether it makes it a better game. Still, we have it and need to explore it further.
