Samuel S. Lockhart was born at Tarbolton, Ayrshire, Scotland, November 20, 1850. His family moved to Brooklyn, New York, when he was two years old. Two years later they moved to Caledonia, Wisconsin.
His education was in the Wisconsin area where he obtained education to the extent of passing the Bar and became a lawyer in 1883. In the same year he moved to Milbank, Dakota Territory, and established a law practice.
He was married at Randolph, Wisconsin, March 29, 1879, to Miss Harriet L. Marvin and from this union there were three daughters and two sons.
He was raised May 8, 1875, in Fort Winnebago Lodge No. 33 of Portage, Wisconsin. He demitted and affiliated with Milbank Lodge No. 20, Milbank, on March 19, 1891. He was a member of and had been active in the York Rite Chapter and Commandery.
1911
When Grand Master Lockhart opened the thirty-seventh Annual Meeting at Chamberlain in 1911, he was the leader of 8,901 Masons in 128 constituent lodges. He was pleased to hear that 89 lodges were represented and that there had been a net gain in membership during the year of 577.
In his report he announced that 118 of the brethren had been called to the lodge above during the year. In this group were three Past Grand Masters, Brother H. H. Blair, Brother William C. Allen, and Brother Frederick H. Files.
New temples had been dedicated at Redfield, Huron, and Woonsocket. Cornerstones had been laid for a new Masonic Temple at Wagner and for the Court House in Brookings.
Western Star Lodge No. 157 had been constituted at Presho and dispensations had been issued for new lodges at Cresbard, Mt. Vernon, Edgemont, Murdo, Isabel, Mobridge, and McIntosh.
The committee appointed to consider the George Washington Masonic National Memorial Association's request for participation in the project, presented the following resolution, which was adopted.
That the Grand Lodge of South Dakota endorse the movement for the erection of the Memorial Temple at Alexandria, Virginia, under the auspices of the George Washington Masonic National Memorial Association, and that we shall welcome the efforts of any brother who solicit the necessary funds from our membership for a participation in the same.
The Grand Master reported that many Grand Jurisdictions were compiling histories and he recommended that a Grand Historian be appointed at the Session.
Parkston Lodge No. 143, after more than two years of inactivity, surrendered its charter.
