He attended Eastman Business College for a time, and then entered a law office for six years after which he was admitted to practice. On April 10, 1880, he moved to Rapid City, Dakota Territory. He served as mayor of Rapid City in 1889. He established a private practice of law in Rapid City.

He became a Mason in Utica Lodge No. 47, Utica, New York, February 26, 1877. He became a charter member of Rapid City Lodge No. 25, Rapid City, on June 15, 1882. He was a member of Black Hills Chapter No. 25, Royal Arch Masons, and served as Grand High Priest. He was also a member of Schrader Commandery No. 9, Knight Templar, and served as Grand Commander.

1885

The eleventh Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of Dakota was opened at Fargo on June 9, 1885, by Grand Master John F. Schrader. It was the first Communication to be held in the northern part of Dakota Territory. The Credentials Committee reported that fifty-six lodges were represented.

The Grand Secretary reported that a set of Grand Lodge Jewels, consisting of fourteen pieces and a case, had been purchased for $152.00.

It was noted with pleasure that the Grand Secretary of Minnesota had presented the Grand Lodge of Dakota, for the first time, a full and complete set of Minnesota Proceedings.

Dispensations had been issued for lodges at Harrold, LaMoure, Portland, Groton, Custer City, Carrington, Diana, Highmore, Bridgewater, Blunt, Salem, Page, Devils Lake, Ipswich, Frankfort, Cavalier, and Woonsocket during the year. Charters were ordered issued to the lodges. A duplicate charter was issued to Pierre Lodge No. 27 and Millbank Lodge No. 20 due to destructive fires in the lodges.

Cornerstones had been laid during the year for the Northern Hospital for the Insane at Jamestown and the Episcopal College in Sioux Falls. Masonic Temples had been dedicated at Sioux Falls, Fargo, and Watertown.

The sum of $100.00 was appropriated to buy a suitable gift for the Grand Secretary of Iowa, T. S. Parvin. It was to be a present for his private office in the new Masonic Library in Cedar Rapids and was to be a token of appreciation for his valuable services to the brethren of Dakota.

The Committee on Work reported that Brother J. S. Huston had served during the year as Grand Lecturer. He had visited forty lodges and held schools of instruction in twenty-three. They recommended that the work be continued and $500.00 be appropriated for his expenses.

A Past Grand Master's Jewel was presented to Past Grand Master Oscar S. Gifford and a gold watch with the Past Grand Master's Jewel embossed thereon to Past Grand Master George H. Hand.
