Brother John Lewis Turner was born August 26, 1843 at Geneseo, New York. After attending schoo1 in Geneseo, he was sent to a private school in Geneva after which he continued his studies in a commercial college in Rochester. After comp1eting his course he became associated with his father in the cattle business. In 1864 he moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan and from there to Springfield, Dakota Territory, in 1870. He associated himself with general merchandising, a type of business in which he spent most of his adult working life. He was very active in civic, community and state affairs.
