It was from Fort Randall, Dakota Territory, that the first Masonic activity in the new Territory was attempted. A group of nine brethren petitioned the Grand Lodge of Iowa for a dispensation to open a lodge under the name of Dacotah. Their petition was approved and on April 23, 1862, a dispensation was granted with Brother Franklin J. DeWitt as Worshipful Master, Brother A. G. Fuller as Senior Warden, and Brother M. R. Luse as Junior Warden. For some unrecorded reason no apparent action was ever taken to organize or work the new lodge under the dispensation.
The Proceedings of the Grand Lodge of Iowa make no further mention of Dacotah Lodge until June 2, 1863, when we find the following:
"That the matters relating to Dacotah Lodge be left in the hands of the Grand Master."
A charter was never issued and no further record of Dacotah Lodge U.D. ever appeared in the annual proceedings of the Grand Lodge of Iowa.
Brother George W. Kingsbury, prominent early-day Dakota Mason and historian said:
"It appears that no further steps were taken to complete the organization at Fort Randall. Brother DeWitt spent the summer and part of the fall of 1862 in the Red River country and did-not return to Dakota until May 1863, while Brother Fuller was engrossed with the work of recruitiqg a Company of Cavalry for the Indian War during the same time. Brother Luse was an officer in the 7th Iowa Volunteer Cavalry with headquarters at Fort Randall during 1862 and part of 1863."
From all records available it has not been possible to prove or disprove that a meeting was ever held by Dacotah Lodge U. D.
