1967
The ninety-third Annual Communication was held at Yankton in June of 1967. Grand Master Tisher in his address to the Grand Lodge said in part, "It is a sad fact that many of our newly raised brethren do not return regularly to their lodges. Is this our fault or theirs? Do not we as regular members assume a moral obligation to these newly raised brethren to properly direct and instruct them in the principles of Freemasonry? Should we not explain that our fraternity is concerned not only with Ancient Craft Masonry, but with freedom in many areas - freedom of speech, freedom of conscience, freedom of education, freedom of thought, and freedom of government for all mankind?"
The Masonic Messenger was sent to all the members for the first time in February, 1967. Preliminary reports showed this to be a good move as a method of better informing the members of the Grand Lodge happenings.
Tyrian Lodge No. 100, Egan, had consolidated during the year with Flandreau Lodge No. 11. This dropped the number of chartered lodges to 164, and the membership to 18,536, a loss of 363 members for the year.
A proposal to amend the by-laws by deleting the liquor restriction on membership and an amendment to allow statewide territorial jurisdiction were presented and both failed to pass.
The Board of General Activities reported the issuance of three 70-year palms, twenty-two 60-year palms, and one hundred seventeen 50-year medals.
According to custom the District Masters met on Monday afternoon preceding the opening of Grand Lodge. The meeting of the South Dakota Lodge of Research followed the meeting of the District Masters. A no-host dinner was served on Monday evening at which the District Masters were the invited guests. After the dinner the Board of Custodians held a school of instruction.
A total of 100 lodges were represented with 16 Past Grand Masters and 17 distinguished guests being present.
The sixty-sixth annual session of the Masonic Veterans' Association was presided over by Brother Frank Roe of Beresford.
Brother Sigurd Anderson, former Governor of South Dakota and Grand Orator, was the speaker at the annual banquet. His message "America on Trial" was outstanding and was taped for future use.
